Former Jammu-Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti on Monday lauded former Prime Minister late Atal Bihari Vajpayee at a prayer meeting organised to pay tribute to the late statesman. While praising the former Prime Minister vis a vis his stance towards the state of Jammu-Kashmir, Mehbooba Mufti said:
“He was a great human being but for the people of Jammu and Kashmir, he was not less than a Messiah. He was the first Indian leader who trusted the people of Jammu-Kashmir and whom the people trusted.”
While addressing the prayer meeting, Mufti also said, “It was Vajpayee ji, who went to Pakistan and made Musharraf Sahab say that they will not use the land of Jammu and Kashmir for militancy.”
Earlier in the same meeting, Prime Minister Modi also remarked how Vajpayee brought the whole world on the same page as India over the issue of terrorism.
On August 18, the former Jammu-Kashmir Chief Minister took to Twitter to pay homage to the late statesman expressing her gratitude for the trust Vajpayee “reposed in Mufti saheb (Mufti Mohammed Sayeed) and the tremendous respect they had for each other”.
She also asserted that during Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s tenure as the Indian Prime Minister for the first time it seemed that “the PM of the country and Chief Minister of Jammu-Kashmir were on the same as far as resolution of Kashmir or relations with Pakistan were concerned.”
Mehbooba Mufti’s statements come at a significant time as the PDP and the BJP recently broke their alliance in the Valley leading to Governor’s rule in the state of Jammu-Kashmir.
Recently, the PDP chief also launched a blistering attack on the BJP government, calling the alliance as a ‘cup of poison’.
