Meghalaya Governor Tathagata Roy on Thursday said the government has asked the authorities to provide relief to people in the flood-affected districts of Garo Hills and Jaintia Hills region. At least 5,000 people have been affected by the flood and five relief camps were set up in the Garo Hills region.

"Carefully watching the flood situation in Meghalaya. Garo and Jaintia Hills worst affected. Government has asked Deputy Commissioners to provide relief," Roy tweeted.

Revenue Minister Kyrmen Shylla said that 420 houses in 35 villages in West Garo Hills and North Garo Hills were damaged, while 10 persons were rescued in West Jaintia Hills district in the past 36 hours. Incessant rainfall lashed the state and many villages have been disconnected after the approach roads to these villages were affected due to landslides and flooding, public works department (PWD) officials said. Work to restore the affected roads have begun, the officials informed.

Meghalaya has been receiving rainfall for the past one week under the impact of cyclone Amphan. Mawsynram and Sohra towns received more rainfall in a week than what Delhi, Haryana or Punjab witness in a year, a Met department official said. Mawsynram and Sohra received 1506.2 mm and 1039.4 mm of rainfall from May 20 till Wednesday, the official said. Delhi and Haryana's average annual rainfall is 617 mm while Punjabs average annual rainfall is 649 mm. Both towns also received over 300 mm rainfall on a single day on May 23.
