Ayodhya Verdict | Supreme Court fast-tracks Ayodhya hearing, Mandir verdict likely before 2019 elections

In a big development in Ayodhya case, Supreme Court on Thursday batted for the speedy disposal of Babri pleas. While making it clear that there won’t be any delay in the title dispute hearing, the top court said that non-stop hearing in the case will begin in the week commencing from October 29. Justice Ashok Bhushan while reading out the majority judgment said “the appeals have been pending for a long time and require speedy disposal”.

With the top court fast-tracking the Ayodhya case, it is being speculated that the verdict could come out before 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

The Supreme Court’s majority judgment rejected the plea to refer the case to a larger bench and said the matter will only be treated as a ‘land issue’. Justice Ashok Bhushan said that every judgment must be read as applicable to the particular facts, while citing the ruling in the 1994 M Ismail Faruqui case. The majority judgment also said that ‘place won’t affect the Right to Worship and that the 1994 judgment won’t impact the Ayodhya verdict.

The 1994 ruling in M Ismail Faruqui case had said that a mosque was not an “essential part of the practice of the religion of Islam” and hence “its acquisition (by the state) is not prohibited.

Meanwhile, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) welcomed the Supreme Court’s ruling to fast-track the case. The working president of VHP Alok Kumar said that he “satisfied with the verdict. The issue will not be referred to larger bench. It has been 68 years. Now,  there will be a speedy trial.”

Senior BJP leader and Rajya Sabha MP Dr Subramanian Swamy while reacting on the verdict seemed positive about the Ram temple construction starting before 2019.

“Fundamental Rights have prevailed. Would like the construction to start before Diwali,” said Dr Subramanian Swamy.
