In a big development, the Mumbai Police's Anti-Extortion Cell has arrested underworld don Dawood Ibrahim's nephew Rizwan while he was trying to flee the country. He arrested on Wednesday night by the police from the Mumbai airport while he was trying to escape the country. Rizwan Kaskar has been arrested in connection to extortion cases against him.
The interrogation is underway by the police and he will be produced before the Killa Court later today.
Rizwan Kaskar is the son of Dawood Ibrahim's younger brother Iqbal, who is currently booked in Thane Jail. Rizwan has alleged links with Ahmed Raza aka Afroz Wadariya, who was arrested by the police earlier on Tuesday, after he was deported from Dubai. Raza was a close aide of underworld don Chota Shakeel and used to handle the hawala transactions for them.
Dawood Ibrahim is wanted in the country for his alleged connection with the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case. He is believed to be in hiding in Karachi, Pakistan. While there have been multiple proofs of his presence in Pakistan, Islamabad has repeatedly denied the presence of the wanted gangster in its soil.
Addressing a press briefing earlier in July, MEA spokesperson Raveesh Kumar had slammed Pakistan for its 'cosmetic efforts' to tackle terrorism in their country and not acting upon Dawood Ibrahim.
"The issue of Dawood Ibrahim's presence in Pakistan is known, and Pakistan's denial about it shows that it is not serious about tackling terror in its soil. I am not aware if this has been communicated through FATF," he had said.
India has also lashed out at Pakistan for its role in providing a 'safe haven' to Dawood Ibrahim while addressing the UN Security Council. Syed Akbaruddin, who is India's Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations, had called out the neighbouring country demanding it to acknowledge Ibrahim's existence in the country.
