In a big embarrassment for Rahul Gandhi's ally Jignesh Mevani, his alma mater has cancelled an event where he was invited as the chief guest, following objections from students.
The Vadgam MLA was called as a chief guest in an event in alma mater, the HK college in Ahmedabad.
However, his alma mater snubbed him as it did not want him the college campus.
The annual event usually invites alumni as the chief guest, however, 20 teachers from the college voted against Jignesh Mevani's invitation following which the principal cancelled the event.
The students spoke to Republic TV and said that the event was a respectable one and hence they did not want a separatist like Mevani to attend it, adding that they did not want a situation like JNU. They also said that they did want their peers to be politically motivated by the politician.
They added that they had heard his speeches and did not want such language in the event. They also said they did not mind any politician be it from the Congress or any other party but oppose the Gujarat MLA's invitation. They even told the lecturers that they opposed not only Mevani's naming as chief guest but also altogether his invitation to the event.
The students who were opposing Mevani's invitation also included from SC/ST, who said that they have seen his lectures and speeches and did not want him in the event.
The principal also spoke to Republic TV said that the students categorically told him that Mevani is separatist and belived in that ideology, and that they did not want a repeat of a situation like that of JNU.
While Mevani is an independent candidate from Vadgam, he is supporting the Congress in the Lok Sabha polls.
Accordingly, Patidar leader Hardik Patel, Vadgam MLA Jignesh Mevani and former JNUSU president Kanhaiya Kumar have been chosen by the Congress to hold collective and individual rallies ahead of the elections.
