BJP lodges complaint against Kejriwal govt for alleged misuse of funds

A delegation consisting of members of the BJP party in Delhi led by party leader and Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament (MP) Vijay Goel met the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) in relation to the alleged misuse of public funds by the Arvind Kejriwal-led state government while carrying out advertisements, on October 11.

'We have appealed to the Election Commission'

The Rajya Sabha MP  after meeting the CEC stated, "Elections will be held in Delhi in February or earlier than that, and the Model Code of Conduct applies two months before the election. AAP government is already committing a crime by misusing public money in advertisements.” He further added, “We have appealed to the Election Commission that they cannot just silently watch the misuse of citizens' money.”

'He is misusing the government machinery'

Goel alleged that the Chief Minister was trying to take credit of others' work using the means of expensive advertisements. "He is misusing the government machinery and public money for his own political gain. Why does he forget that he is the servant of the people and not their master? Kejriwal is also promoting works that have not even been done. Large hoardings and posters are being installed for the advertisement of AAP government," he said. "Kejriwal is misusing public money to win the upcoming Assembly elections. It is the responsibility of the Election Commission to hold free and fair polls," he added. Vijender Gupta, MP Ramesh Bidhuri, MLA OP Sharma, Delhi BJP general secretary Kuljeet Chahal and others were also part of the delegation that met the CEC.

Model Code of Conduct is a set of guidelines issued by the EC

The Election Commission’s (EC) Model Code of Conduct is a set of guidelines issued by the EC to regulate political parties and political candidates before the elections to ensure free and fair elections. This is in accordance with Article 324 of the Constitution, which gives the Election Commission the power to supervise elections to the Parliament and state legislatures. It is a general code with rules which apply to issues relating speeches, polling day, booth and the content of election manifestos. This code of conduct stays in force from the date of announcement to the day of result.
