Over two months after the Supreme Court Collegium modified its resolution, the Centre on Friday, November 8, cleared the appointment of Justice Akil Kureshi as the Chief Justice of Tripura High Court. In an official communique, the Ministry of Law and Justice notified, "The President is pleased to appoint Justice of the Bombay High Court to be the Chief Justice of the Tripura High Court with effect from the date he assumes charge of his office."

Recommended for MP HC by Collegium

The Supreme Court Collegium had in May this year recommended Justice Kureshi's elevation as the Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court. Just a day before the Lok Sabha election results were announced, the Central government issued twelve notifications clearing appointments of judges to various HCs as well as the apex court. However, this round missed any clearance of Justice Kureshi for appointment as Chief Justice of the Court. The Centre then on June 7 notified the appointment of Justice Ravi Shanker Jha as Acting Chief Justice of the said court. This was a signal of its intention to not clear the file of Justice Kureshi for the post.

Order modified

The Collegium on September 5 modified its order and recommended him as the Chief Justice of the Tripura HC. This proposal had also raised controversy, with critics querying why Justice Kureshi was given to helm the Tripura HC, a smaller High Court in comparison to the one in MP. On November 4, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta cited some remaining administrative formalities in relation to the recommendation made by Collegium to appoint Justice Kureshi as Chief Justice of Tripura HC.

Long service

Justice Kureshi started his legal practice in July 1983, following which he served as the additional central government standing counsel till 1998. He was appointed as additional counsel for the Income-tax department in January 2000 and thereafter represented it in the Gujarat HC. Four years later, he was appointed as an additional judge of the court and confirmed as the permanent Judge the subsequent year. In 2018, he was transferred to the Bombay HC.
