Centre to set up a unit to monitor the implementation of PMAY-U

The Centre has proposed to set up a unit to monitor the implementation of 'Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana' (Urban), officials said on Wednesday. According to a Request for Proposal (RFP) sent by the Union Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry on September 19, the Programme Management Unit (PMU) will provide focused support for the PMAY (U) under 'Housing for All by 2022 Mission', a flagship programme of the Modi government. "The Ministry has invited proposals from experienced consulting firm/agency for providing manpower for the establishment of Programme Management Unit for PMAY," an official claimed.

'Target of Constructing Around 1.12 Crore Houses'

The RFP stated that the firms participating should not have an average annual financial turnover of last three consecutive fiscal years which is less than Rs 9 crore. The Ministry, which is mandated to execute the PMAY (Urban), said agencies that are interested can submit their proposals by October 17. A pre-bid meeting is scheduled to happen on October 4. The Centre has proposed to set up the PMU by April 2020 which will operate till 2022.

Under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojan (Urban), the government has set a target of constructing around 1.12 crore houses in urban areas by 2022. The Centre will also provide financial assistance to recipients under the housing scheme. According to the website of PMAY (U), 88.19 lakh houses have so far been sanctioned, 52.32 lakh houses are grounded for construction and 24.16 lakh houses have been handed over to beneficiaries. Last month, Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister, Hardeep Singh Puri had said that the target of 'Housing for All' would be achieved in 2020, two years before the deadline.

Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojna - Gramin

The Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in the Union Budget speech had announced that the Centre would build 1.95 crore houses under the PMAY-Gramin scheme. Sitharaman had claimed that Narendra Modi government keeps 'Gaon, Garib and Kisan at the centre' of everything it does. The second phase of the PMAY-Gramin from 2019-20 to 2021-22 will also get amenities like LPG, electricity and toilets. The Finance Minister claimed that by the end of 2022 every single family in the rural regions would have electricity connection and clean cooking facility.
