Chandigarh: Locals launch cleanliness drive to preserve Dalpat Sagar

Chandigarh local residents on Friday had launched a cleanliness drive to clean and preserve the 400-year-old Dalpat Sagar Lake in Jagdalpur of Bastar district. According to reports, the drive was carried out by the locals after claiming that the administration in the area was not taking up any steps to prevent the contamination of the water body. The contamination has been affecting the flora and fauna around the wetlands. According to a local, the contamination has affected marine life due to a severe fall in oxygen levels in the water. 

About the cleanliness drive

According to reports, as a part of the cleanliness drive, the locals cleaned the pond from 6 AM to 8 PM. Upon cleaning, around three to four tons of water hyacinths and waste were taken out from the pond. According to the campaign members, they did not receive any support from the government. However, they still went on and took out the cleanliness drive, they said. According to them, "Only a few ponds are left which is the heritage of Bastar, and we have taken the responsibility to preserve every one of them."

About Dalpat Sagar Lake

According to reports, King Dalpat Dev had built the Dalpat Sagar Lake in 1772 for irrigation and drainage purposes in the city. However, over time, the pond has been neglected. According to the campaign members, the government had tried to save the pond around 18 to 19 years ago, however, they had failed. Currently, they added, that the condition of the pond has become miserable.
