Former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu has been placed under house arrest on Wednesday, September 11, ahead of his 'Chalo Atmakur' protest rally. His son Nara Lokesh along with many other leaders have been detained, following an altercation with the police. The rally was being taken up to highlight the alleged killing of 8 Telugu Desam Party (TDP) activists and other atrocities by the Jagan Mohan Reddy government. The former Andhra Pradesh CM, following the house arrest sat on a hunger strike to protest against the move. Naidu sat on a fast at around 8 am and will continue till 8 pm.

Section 144 of the CrPC imposed by state Police

Chandrababu Naidu called for a rally at Atmakur today, alleging that hundreds of families have been forced to flee from their villages due to frequent attacks by Yuvajana Sramika Rythu (YSR) Congress Party workers. TDP leaders and workers who were trying to visit Naidu at his residence were stopped by police and were taken into preventive custody, in the early hours of Wednesday, September 11. According to the police, TDP did not receive any permission to conduct the rally. The state police had already imposed Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) in Palanadu, Narasaraopeta, Sattenapalle and Gurajala.

“This ineffective government is creating obstacles at every step of the Chalo Atmakur program launched by TDP today… This is the pinnacle of the Tughlaq rule,” Nara Lokesh tweeted.

The TDP has alleged that eight party workers have been killed, most of them in the Palnadu region, in the attacks by the YSRCP leaders. Over 500 TDP activists and sympathisers were attacked since the announcement of election results in May, it added.

Other TDP leaders arrested

Former Andhra Pradesh Minister and TDP leader Bhuma Akhila Priya has been taken into preventive detention by police at Novotel hotel in Vijaywada. In Krishna district, Andhra Pradesh, former TDP MLA Tangirala Sowmya was house arrested at Nandigama town after Sowmya and other TDP leaders sat on a protest in front of her house for party's ‘Chalo Atmakur’ rally against YSRCP.

Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy-led YSRCP government, however, had said that it would not allow the TDP leaders to disturb peace in the state. “Action will be taken against anyone trying to create a law and order situation,” state Home Minister M Sucharita said.
