Achieving a major milestone, ISRO has announced Chandrayaan-2's Vikram Lander's separation from the orbiter on Monday at 1:15 PM. Sharing details of this update, ISRO has stated that Vikram Lander is currently located in an orbit of 119 km x 127 km. Meanwhile, the Chandrayaan-2 Orbiter continues to orbit the Moon in its existing orbit. ISRO also stated that the systems of Chandrayaan-2 Orbiter and Lander are healthy and are being monitored from the Mission Operations Complex at Bengaluru.

Earlier on Sunday, Chandrayaan-2 completed its final orbit maneuver successfully at 1821 hrs IST. ISRO announced that the duration of the maneuver was 52 seconds and was performed using the onboard propulsion system. The orbit achieved is 119 km x 127 km, according to ISRO. Previously on August 30, ISRO had announced that the spacecraft has successfully completed the fourth orbit maneuver at 18:18 hours IST. Chandrayaan-2 sent its first moon photos on August 22.

ISRO has stated that Chandrayaan-2 is scheduled to land on the Moon on September 7, 2019, at 1:40 AM (IST). The lander named Vikram after the founder of India’s space program, Vikram Sarabhai will land on the South pole of the lunar surface. The lander contains the  6-wheeled rover 'Pragyan'which will then begin exploring the lunar surface. ISRO chief has described the landing as the '15 minutes of terror'.

Chandrayaan-2's rocket lifted off at the scheduled time of 2:43 PM on July 22. The average distance between the Earth and the Moon is 3, 84, 000 km. Vikram lander will land on Moon on the 48th day of the mission on September 7. This moon-lander and rover mission proves that India is taking lead in space exploration as its mission aims to investigate the unexplored south pole of the moon. With Chandrayaan-2 India aims at the soft landing on the Moon. If successful, it will be the fourth country after the US, Russia, and China to do so.
