On Thursday, a day after Congress leader P Chidambaram was arrested by the CBI in money laundering and corruption cases in relation to the INX media case, the central agency, as per sources, questioned Chidambaram for close to three hours. Sources also said that the former Finance Minister was not cooperative with the CBI. Sources to Republic Media Network's Shawan Sen informed about CBI's next move with respect to INX media case and P Chidamabaram. Below are the details.
The sources have said that CBI is focusing to get the custody of P Chidambaram. They are preparing the application for his remand. Chidambaram will be presented before court later on Thursday post 2.00 pm. The central agency will be asking for his custody during his court appearance. At a later stage, sources say, the CBI is likely to bring Chidambaram face to face with Indrani Mukerjea who has turned approver in the INX media case.
The grounds for remand of the senior Congress leader are - that the former Finance Minister is non-cooperative during questioning, he has denied ever meeting with Indrani and Peter Mukerjea, and that new facts have emerged since his questioning by CBI in June 2018
The doctors asked Chidambaram a few questions over his medical history, and that if he was on any medication, and his blood pressure and other vital information were noted. It is known that the former Finance Minister's kept his responses short and maintained silent on queries of the CBI. Pertaining to security concerns, a medical examination was conducted at the CBI Headquarters by RML Hospital Medical team led by the Medical Superintendent at around 11 PM after the 'kingpin' was arrested at around 10 PM on Wednesday night.
