There was intense drama in New Delhi as P Chidambaram surfaced after 27 hours to address the press at the Congress headquarters on Wednesday. While his explanation for the INX Media case was dramatic, what followed was all the more eventful.
As the Rajya Sabha MP returned to his home, the officers of the CBI also immediately landed at his residence. When Chidambaram and his family didn’t respond to the knocks at the gates, the officers even scaled the wall.

After his request for anticipatory bail in the INX Media case was rejected by the Delhi High Court, the former Union Minister went hiding for 27 hours.
Addressing the news briefing at the Congress headquarters, Chidambaram maintained that neither he, his son Karti or any other member of his family have been accused of any offence in the INX Media case. He further claimed that there is no charge sheet filed by either ED or CBI before a competent court in the INX Media case.
"I believe that the foundation of a democracy is liberty, most precious article of the constitution is Article 21 that guarantees life and liberty. If I'm asked to choose between life and liberty, I shall unhesitatingly choose liberty. In the last 24 hours, much happened that has caused concern to some and confusion to many. Many statements today is to address that concern and confusion," the former Home Minister said during the press briefing.
"In the INX Media case, I have not been accused of any offence, nor is anyone else including any member of my family been accused in any offence. In fact, nor has any charge sheet filed by either the CBI or the ED before the court. The FIR recorded by the CBI does not impute to me any wrongdoing yet there is a widespread impression that grave offences have been committed and my son and I have committed those offences. Nothing can be further from the truth spread by pathological liars," he added.
Opening up on the reason for his absence for 27 hours, he said, “At the press briefing at the Congress headquarters, Chidambaram said, “My lawyers, also my dear friends who are present here, advised me to move the Supreme Court. On my behalf, they did so yesterday evening and today. They appealed repeatedly, to the Honourable Supreme Court to list the appeals for hearing urgently and in the meanwhile, grant me interim protection. While my lawyers, all senior counsel, were moving the Supreme Court, other lawyers and I worked through the night last night to prepare the papers. We completed this task only this morning, and immediately filed the appeals in the Supreme Court. Today, throughout the day, I was with my lawyers following the proceedings in the Supreme Court. I was aghast that I was accused of hiding from the law. On the contrary, I was seeking the protection of the law. I was accused of running away from justice, on the contrary, I was engaged in the pursuit of justice.”
