Jadavpur University incident

Earlier on Thursday, MP Babul Supriyo was blocked at the Jadavpur University in Kolkata as he tried to enter the University premises. He was attending an ABVP event when he was blocked by students, many of whom were members of CPM-backed Students Federation of India (SFI). Visuals showed them gheraoing Supriyo and having a verbal confrontation mainly over the National Register of Citizens (NRC). Matters turned violent when  Babul Supriyo was seen asking an activist to apologise since one of his cadres had hit him with a stick. The Vice-Chancellor was seen attempting to pacify the Union Minister to no avail. He was then let into the campus.

The incident turned ugly when Supriyo was stuck inside the campus for at least three hours. A spectacle was created when Supriyo sat on the media OB Van bonnet. Later the West Bengal Governor and the CRPF were rushed to the University with the Kolkata police deployed outside the gate. The Vice-Chancellor of the University, Suranjan Das, was allegedly attacked in the face-off and has been hospitalised. Both ABVP and SFI students have been protesting since then.

The governor slammed Trinamool saying that his visit was rendered imperative as authorities had left while Supriyo was stuck in the University. The Union Minister, on the other hand, has accused West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee of not helping the state Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar in the Jadavpur University incident. He also mentioned that just to change the narrative, Mamata Banerjee let the entire incident take place.
