Chief Minister of Delhi Arvind Kejriwal on Monday held a press conference to inform that the Delhi Government has planned to install streetlights in the dark spots of Delhi in a bid to ensure the safety of women in the country's capital. In his press conference, Kejriwal also brought the discussion of the rising prices of onion and the government's plan on controlling the price rise.

Kejriwal in his press conference, stated that the government is planning to install streetlights in the dark spots in a bid to ensure the safety of women in the national capital. He indicated that there were technical hindrances before but the government has now found solutions for them and will be installing the streetlight in the dark spots of the city. The Chief Minister added that 2,10,000 lightbulbs will be installed on the streets with the efforts of three DISCOMs with each DISCOM installing 70,000 lightbulbs of 20 watts each.

The lightbulbs will have an inbuilt sensor which will light them up as the sunlight reduces. Kejriwal appended that the electricity bill of the installed lightbulbs will be attached to those houses on which they are mounted and the amount will be deducted or adjusted later, the process of which is still under discussion and the lightbulbs will have a manufacturer's guarantee of two to three years while its maintenance will be borne by the company which will cost 100 crores.

The price rise of onions

The Delhi Chief Minister has also spoken about the recent increase in the price of onions and his government’s efforts to control the price rise.

“We are procuring onions and we will try to supply it at Rs 24 through mobile vans and stalls. Tenders have been floated for this and the service will hopefully start in ten days”, Kejriwal said. 

Prices of onions have shot up nearly as high as Rs 70 to Rs 80 per kilogram, a record four year high in the price of onions. Supplier states such as Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat witnessed heavy rainfall affecting the crops and the supply channels leading to prices increasing by up to 25% in some places.
