To combat the growing air pollution and traffic congestion, the Delhi government is planning to introduce work in shifts across government departments. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal revealed this on microblogging website Twitter. He stated that he met the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, Anil Baijal and informed him about his administration’s steps to reduce air pollution. The Odd-Even car rationing scheme also featured in their discussion. According to Kejriwal, Baijal assured his complete support and put forth for consideration, the possibility of staggering either the opening or closing hours of offices. The Delhi CM promised to act on this suggestion. As per a rough estimate, there are over one lakh employees of the Delhi government in the city.

Kejriwal's plan to tackle air pollution

On September 13, the Delhi CM unveiled a 7-action plan to control pollution. This included the distribution of masks, a tree plantation drive and a separate plan to deal with 12 pollution hotspots in the city. Also, he promised to adopt mechanized sweeping and use water sprinklers to control dust. Furthermore, Kejriwal requested the people to abstain from burning crackers as the Supreme Court had banned the sale of crackers in Delhi. He added that the government would host a laser show for the people on Chhoti Diwali.

Odd-Even scheme

However, the most radical move was the re-introduction of the Odd-Even scheme, which was previously experimented in 2016. On this occasion, it would be implemented from November 4 to November 15. During this period, vehicles would ply alternately on odd and even dates as per their registration numbers. Not only are women exempted, but the Odd-Even rule would also not be operational on weekends.
