The CPI(M) said on Saturday that the government should desist from any "political adventurism" in Jammu and Kashmir that will have grave consequences for the country and demanded explanation on steps being taken in the state.

The party's politburo in a statement said the "unprecedented" cancellation of the Amarnath Yatra has heightened tensions and anxieties among the people of the state.

"A serious situation has developed in Jammu & Kashmir as a consequence of the recent steps taken by the Central government. The deployment of an additional contingent of paramilitary forces amounting to 35,000 troops has raised questions about their intended purpose.

"The unprecedented cancellation of the Amarnath Yatra mid-way and the instructions to tourists to leave the valley forthwith have heightened tensions and anxieties among the people," the statement said.

It said although Parliament is in session, the government has given no statement whatsoever on these measures.

"Nor have the political parties in the state been taken into confidence," it said.

"All this has fuelled apprehensions among the people that some drastic measures affecting the Constitutional status of Jammu & Kashmir are being contemplated with reference to Article 35A and Article 370," it added.

The politburo demanded that the government provide a full explanation for the steps being taken in the state and desist from any "political adventurism".

"The government should implement its promise to initiate a dialogue with all concerned political forces in the state," the statement said.

Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satya Pal Malik reiterated that there is no 'imminent panic' in Kashmir, assured that in case of any development he would keep people in the loop and shunned the rumours of trifurcation.

In an exclusive interaction with Republic TV's Zeenat Zeeshan, Malik asserted that Pakistan is deliberately keeping the 'borders hot' by heavy shelling with the motive to show it to the US President Donald Trump.

He said, "I've assured people there is nothing to panic about. According to my communication with leaders in Delhi, there is no imminent panic. As long as the deployment of security officers is concerned, they've been here since the elections. Now they want to go and new forces want to come in. You must have seen in Srinagar, there has been more jet sortie in the past be a week. Pakistan is deliberately keeping the borders hot. There has been so much shelling in the past 4-6 days that we had to use such heavy weapons because they want to show Trump that this is a dispute. This is not related to us. There were rumours of trifurcation, but all these things will happen from the Parliament, this cannot happen in a day. I don't see why people should be worried about."

He reiterated that there are "a lot of rumours" doing the rounds, furthermore asserted that the threat over Amarnath Yatra was "real" and that the decision to curtail the pilgrim.

He said, "There are a lot of rumours. We did not let schools or universities shut in Kashmir and we said in the next 10 days schools would be opened. As long as the Yatris are concerned it is our responsibility, even if something happens to one Yatri there is a repercussion in the entire nation. The threat was real, the press brief by Chinar Corps Lt. Gen must have clarified everything, the type of IED and gun was found is a deadly weapon. If the weapon was used by chance, it would've caused casualty and the entire nation would curse us. This year more Yatris came."
