As part of the Alpha Files expose, Republic TV has accessed a court order that shows that cops under the Siddaramaiah government did not impound the passport of bank fraud accused Mehul Choksi’s despite a Civil Court order to do so.

On 23rd April 2015, the Civil court in Bengaluru passed an order laying down the conditions for bail to be granted to Choksi, with regard to a case of alleged duping of a franchise owner. In the conditions that the court laid down, Choksi was asked to “deposit /surrender his original passport along with all additional booklets at the Police station and the same will be retained by the I.O until the completion of the investigation”. However, the Bengaluru Police allegedly did not do the same.

The Civil Court order also asked the Investigating Officer in the case “to submit” the passport to the Court along with the final report/chargesheet.

Additionally, as per the order, Choksi was mandated to appear at the Police Station every “2nd Sunday of every month” for the then-ongoing investigation process against him in the case.

Considering the fact that the Bengaluru Police in 2015 did not act on the Civil Court order to ensure that Choksi’s passport is deposited with them, there are serious questions raised on whether there was any political interference in the case by the Siddaramaiah government.

The huge development vastly magnifies the scope and scale of the alleged Nirav Modi-Mehul Choksi bank fraud case as it hints of a prolonged go-slow by governments and law and order agencies on the prime accused.

The Alpha Files’ is a code name for the entire scam plotted over 15+ years, and not one that started in 2011-- proof of which is with Republic TV. Accordingly, the true size of the scam is not just Rs. 11,400 crore, but may be in excess of Rs. 25,000 crores.
