Congress leaders Ahmed Patel, Anand Sharma, and DK Suresh visited the Tihar jail on Thursday to meet Karnataka Congress leader DK Shivakumar. The senior Karnataka Congress leader is currently lodged in the jail under judicial custody of the Enforcement Directorate (ED).

The ED had sent Shivakumar to jail on September 19. The development followed after a Delhi Court had sent DK Shivakumar to judicial custody for 14-days. Special judge Ajay Kumar Kuhar had directed the ED to examine Shivakumar's medical report and then take decisions on sending him to Tihar. Shivakumar was arrested on September 3 due to his alleged involvement in money laundering cases and had been in ED's custody till September 13.

CBI Court dismisses bail plea

In yet another development, the CBI Court on Wednesday dismissed the jailed Congress leader's bail plea in the money laundering case filed against him. According to reports, ED has said that Shivakumar has been evasive during interrogation. They also added that they wished to confront him with several accused during his judicial custody stay in Tihar jail. Shivakumar has been lodged in judicial custody on September 19 and is set to be in Tihar Jail till October 1.

Money laundering case against DK Shivakumar 

The central agency in September 2018 had registered a money laundering case against Shivakumar and Haumanthaiah who was an employee at Karnataka Bhavan in New Delhi, among others. The criminal case was filed based on the charge sheet filed by the Income Tax department against Shivakumar and others before a court in Bengaluru for alleged tax evasion and hawala dealings. The ED also questioned his daughter Aishwarya under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). During the questioning, the ED recorded Aishwarya’s statement and confronted with documents and statements made by Shivakumar with regard to the Singapore trip, as per sources. Earlier, Sachin Narayan, Shivakumar’s business associate and a co-director in Zeus constructions Pvt Ltd till 2014 and Dollars Construction private limited, was also questioned in connection with the case.
