Congress President Sonia Gandhi met DK Shivakumar at Tihar Jail in New Delhi along with another Congress leader Ambika Soni on October 23. DK Shivakumar is facing investigation charges over alleged money laundering by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). DK Suresh, Shivkumar's brother was also present at the meeting. Reportedly DK Suresh said Sonia Gandhi offered party's full support to Shivkakumar and noted that the party stands with him, and was quoted saying the charges DK Shivakumar is facing are political in nature.
"Madam (Sonia Gandhi) wanted to meet from the past two weeks, today we took an appointment complying to all the rules. During the meeting madam gave confidence that the party is supporting you, we will back you, you are a loyal congressman, DK Shivakumar also took things cordially", DK Suresh said after the meeting.
Delhi High Court is expected to give its verdict on DK Shivakumar's bail plea on Wednesday, October 23. He was arrested by the ED over alleged money laundering charges in September. Authorities had also questioned his daughter with regards to the financial transactions between her and her father involving unaccounted money. As per reports authorities had claimed her networth grew rapidly between 2013-2018. Several properties linked to the leader were raided in August 2017.
Former Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy also met DK Shivakumar in jail on Monday. After his meeting, the former Chief Minister said DK Shivakumar is a target of political vendetta and asserted his visit was personal.
"It was a cordial meeting. He is very confident that he can face everything. He has that capacity. Whoever wants to do vengeance politics, they will be taught. This is a personal visit. We worked together. I came here to give confidence to him. He is mentally very strong. He will fight it with boldness. He has given all the details and he co-operated with them very well. Anyone can guess why this is all going on," Mr Kumaraswamy told reporters.
