Even as the clamour for the ouster of Minister of State for External Affairs MJ Akbar is growing, a BJP leader has come out with a shocking defence of the Central minister and former journalist. Chief of Madhya Pradesh BJP women wing Lata Kelkar said that she doesn’t ‘consider female journalists to be so innocent that anyone can misuse them’.
“Journalists are hurling allegations on him and I don’t consider journalist sisters as so innocent so that anyone can misuse them,”said Kelkar while a special emphasis on the word ‘innocent’.
The BJP leader is getting a lot of flak on social media for her regressive and misogynistic views.
In the same breath, however, the Chief of Madhya Pradesh BJP women wing also hailed the #MeToo campaign, saying “I welcome this #MeToo campaign as I feel that this campaign has given courage to these women so that they can speak against harassment because now our primary concern is that the women could at least speak out.”
As many as 10 women have named MJ Akbar so far. It began with a post by journalist Priya Ramani, who called out MJ Akbar and accused him of inappropriate behaviour. After her post, several other women spoke out and accused MJ Akbar of sexual harassment.
Meanwhile, Minister of State for External Affairs MJ Akbar might return back from his foreign tour on Sunday. A call on continuation of his duties will be taken by the government after his return. MJ Akbar was scheduled to return on Friday, however, sources indicated that he, along with others in the delegation, is currently in Malabo of Equatorial Guinea, Central Africa and that the minister will be back on Sunday.
