Dr Thawarchand Gehlot Appointed As New Leader Of House In Rajya Sabha, Piyush Goyal As Deputy LoH

The Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment, Dr Thawarchand Gehlot has been appointed as the Leader of House (LoH) in the Rajya Sabha, while Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal has been appointed Deputy Leader of the House.

Gehlot had taken office on June 4 as Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment. In the NDA's first term, he held the same position. Gehlot contested and represented the Shajapur reserved Lok Sabha constituency from Madhya Pradesh.

Many Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) leaders wished the new LoH. Kuljeet Singh Chahal, the BJP General Secretary from Delhi, lauded Gehlot and sent his wishes through Twitter:

BJP parliamentarian Rakesh Singh said that Gehlot is an experienced leader whose expertise will be of great use in the Rajya Sabha.

Gehlot's entry into politics started with his journey as a student leader who many barriers. When he was elected as a Cabinet Minister, Gehlot vowed to strive for the upliftment of the Dalits and the poor. 

In addition, Gehlot was elected to the Madhya Pradesh legislative assembly thrice. He was also the Minister of State, Water Resources, Narmada Valley Development, Panchayat and Rural Development, Antyodaya Programme and implementation of 20-Point Programme in Madhya Pradesh from 1990 to 1992.

The first Rajya Sabha session is scheduled from June 20 and President Ram Nath Kovind will address a joint sitting of Parliament. With over 27 sittings of the Upper House of the Parliament, the session is scheduled till 26th July.

Meanwhile the Lok Sabha will assemble from June 17. The Speaker's election will be held on 19th June.
