Eleven patients lose eyesight after cataract surgery at Indore Eye Hospital, CM Kamal Nath orders probe

In a major medical mishap, 11 patients have lost their eyesight on Saturday, after undergoing cataract surgery at the Indore Eye Hospital, according to ANI. Detailing the patients' treatment, Indore's Chief Medical and Health Officer, Dr. Pravin Jadia has said that the treatment of all 11 patients has started and that the hospital administration has been ordered to submit a report on the incident within 72 hours

Detailing the patients' treatment, Indore's Chief Medical and Health Officer, Dr. Pravin Jadia has said that the treatment of all 11 patients has started and that the hospital administration has been ordered to submit a report on the incident within 72 hours.

CM Kamal Nath's orders

Expressing grief on the incident, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Kamal Nath and has ordered the Collector to investigate into the issue. Stating a similar incident which had occurred nine years ago, he further questioned how the hospital was allowed to regain its licence.

Directing the immediate treatment of the patients in other reputed medical facilities, he stated that the state would bear the cost of treatment. He also announced an Rs. 50000 compensation to each patient.

MP Health Minister responds

Responding to the Chief  Minister's orders, Madhya Pradesh Health Minister Tulsiram Silawat has stated that the license of the hospital has been ordered to be cancelled while the patients undergoing treatment will be provided compensation of Rs 20,000. He further stated that a formal FIR will be filed against those responsible for the mishap while a 7-member committee is investigating the incident.

2010 eye mishap

Previously in 2010, news reports claim that Indore Eye Hospital was embroiled in a similar controversy when 18 patients had lost vision following cataract surgery. Health officials had then recommended an FIR be lodged against the hospital authorities and the hospital was banned from organising eye camps and surgeries in January 2011. However, later, the ban was lifted.
