Encounter Order | BJP slams 'irresponsible' statement by Karnataka CM HD Kumaraswamy, demands apology

Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy, who is in the line of fire from the opposition after a video emerged wherein he could be seemingly heard ordering a shootout, has come up with a bizarre explanation of his act, stating he was saying those things as a 'citizen', and not as a CM while questioning the legal system of the country.

Since the controversial video emerged, the JD(S) supremo has issued three different clarifications. The first time around, he defended himself by saying that killing the accused wasn't his order, and that he had said so after becoming emotional.

His second defence came in the form of 'slip of tongue'. Kumaraswamy told media that he had given the shootout order in a different context and that he intended to say something else.

The BJP has dubbed Kumaraswamy's defences as 'lame excuses' and demanded an unconditional apology.

BJP chief from the state BS Yeddyurappa said that the CM made an irresponsible statement.

"I never expected that a chief minister will speak like this, whatever be the law and order situation. He made an irresponsible statement. Nobody will excuse him," he said.

Senior BJP leader from Karnataka Jagadish Shettar said that the chief minister had no right to order an encounter.

"We condemn the killing of the JDS worker. One understands that an emotional feeling was expressed about the issue. But there is no difference between the individual and the chief minister. If he is giving a statement, then he is doing it as the CM of Karnataka. He has no right to order an encounter, it is against the law and democratic system,"he said.

BJP leader Prahlad Joshi said that CM Kumaraswamy should give an unconditional apology.

"I think the CM has lost his mental balance as he can't manage the Congress party. Siddaramaiah is troubling Kumaraswamy and putting pressure on him. Kumaraswamy and Devegowda are not following any system for the coalition government. He has lost his mental balance after coming under pressure following the cabinet reshuffle and spoken like this. It is unbecoming of CM Kumaraswamy to speak this way. He should give unconditional apology than giving lame excuses. Or he should say he has no confidence in the legal system of the country and resign."
