Republic TV has accessed exclusive details of Karti Chidambaram's arrest by the CBI on Wednesday.

As per top sources, Karti Chidambaram was trying to destroy evidence while he was in the UK. Agencies learnt of this and hence took the decision to arrest him.

Accordingly, the CBI's Chennai unit was waiting for Karti Chidambaram to come out of immigration.

Karti Chidambaram, son of former finance minister P. Chidambaram, was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in Chennai on Wednesday in connection with the INX Media case for violating the Foreign Exchange Managament Act (FEMA).

Karti was arrested at 8 am on Wednesday morning after non-cooperation. He was nabbed by CBI when he landed at Chennai airport from London.

He is currently being interrogated by the CBI.

Karti Chidambaram has been charged with criminal conspiracy, illegal gratification and money laundering.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) was going to record Karti's statement on March 1 and in all likelihood would have recorded his arrest on that day. Before that, CBI decided to arrest Karti.

This development comes two days after Delhi's Patiala House court on Monday sent S Bhaskaran, Karti Chidambaram's chartered accountant (CA), to 14-day judicial custody in connection with the INX Media money laundering case.

The ED had registered a money laundering case against Karti in May 2017.

Karti is facing a probe for his alleged role in facilitating Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) clearance for INX Media Ltd and its directors, Peter and Indrani Mukerjea - both accused in the murder of Sheena Bora - and others.

Chidambaram is alleged to have received Rs. 3.5 crore from the Mumbai-based INX Media, now 9X Media, for helping it get the FIPB clearance when it was run by the Mukerjeas.
