As the controversy over MS Dhoni wearing wicket-keeping gloves bearing the 'Balidaan Badge' insignia at the World Cup escalates, celebrated Hockey Player Dhanraj Pillay has come out in support of the World Cup-winning Captain, urging him to retain the accoutrement.
Speaking to Republic TV, Dhanraj Pillay said,
"I think every Indian Citizen has the right to showcase their patriotism and I think MS Dhoni has done the right thing, and it is because of soldiers, we civilians are are protected. MS Dhoni is the best captain we have in our cricket team. ICC has to look into the matter and resove the problem because, I feel, whatever MS Dhoni is doing, it is good to see that he has passion for this country, he has love for this nation, and love for cricket.
So I think he is doing a very good job and he has done the right thing and nobody should question his integrity.
Pillai added that ICC will have to take a tough decision regarding this and he also said that every sportsperson should learn from Dhoni that patriotism should come first before anything.
While the BCCI has backed Dhoni's decision to keep the glove on Friday, the ICC CEO, Dave Richardson, speaking to Republic TV said that there clearly seems to be a violation of the dress code.
There is a specific rule of ICC that clearly talks about the dress code. Clearly, this seems to be a violation. I am not commenting on what was Dhoni's intention but ICC may or may not reconsider its stand even if Dhoni & BCCI convince their intention," he said.
The ICC seeking to remove the 'Balidaan Badge' has triggered a major outcry, with support coming in country-wide for Dhoni to keep on the insignia.
