Indian domestic airline Air Vistara posted a picture on their social media account stating that they were honoured to have Major General G D Bakshi (Retd.) onboard and thanked him for his service to the nation. However, it later deleted the tweet after receiving end hate from 'liberals', provoking outrage online over the insult to an Indian war hero.
Speaking exclusively to Republic TV, Major General GD Bakshi (Retd), reacted to the entire debacle and defended the Army amid attacks, saying, "this is a very dangerous trend, this trend to denigrate nationalism, patriotism, treat it as a term of abuse. Look for causes to defame your Army, demonising your Army, humiliating them. I mean what fault are they doing? They are just carrying out their duties in the most hostile circumstances, away from their family, away from their loved ones. They are just risking their life and limb for you".
Further remarking that the step taken by airline Vistara was quite heartening, he said, "I think that it is a very good trend if they honour servicemen, ex-servicemen, veterans, war veterans. Many airlines announce if there are any servicemen, any ex-servicemen, saying please cross the line, come up ahead in the line. And, I am very happy that Vistara did that and I would request my friends to be not to be harsh on them because I thought that they were very nice to me. I have no grounds for complaint and I have just been informed that they are sending two of their officials in order to apologize so I think that it is a very fine gesture. "
On being asked about the one message the war veteran would give to all the haters out there, he said, "I think if they have not found out by themselves, then they are of very minuscule minority and it is extremely sad that some of these left-wing liberalists, so-called 'rags' are treated as the parameter of public opinion in India, they could not be more in dissonance with the opinion of people out there"
Major General G.D Bakshi also went on to inform that the airline is sending two of their officials in order to apologise to him personally.
Major General G D Bakshi is a very decorated retired army officer who was awarded the Vishisht Seva Medal for his exemplary role in the Kargil war. He was also awarded the Sena Medal for counter-terrorism efforts.
