This year in June, the Enforcement Directorate succeeded in getting Interpol to issue a Red Corner Notice against fugitive diamantaire Nirav Modi. The RCN along with the name of the jeweler mentioned the names of his brother Neeshal Modi and close aide Subhash Parab. Neeshal has been on the run for about 241 days, however, now, Republic TV’s Senior News Editor Shawan Sen has tracked him down. For the first time, Republic TV has got Nirav’s brother on record, who blamed a certain family member for his situation, saying, “I am a small guy in a big kind of situation”. Neeshal, while speaking with Republic, also reveals that he is in Belgium and not in the UK and also that he hasn’t met with his brother Nirav Modi for 5-6 months now.
Republic TV’s Shawan Sen, just before attempting to enter Nirav Modi’s apartment in London, wherein he gets stopped by building’s security, tries to get Neeshal Modi on call but gets no response from the other side. After being interrogated for over two hours at length by the security detail at Nirav Modi’s apartment, Sen gets a call back from Neeshal. When Shawan Sen insists on meeting him in London, Neeshal reveals that he is not in London.
“I wish. I wish I could come and meet you but unfortunately, I am not there,” says Neeshal.
Neeshal: Who are you?
Shawan: Neeshal, this is Shawan. I am basically from Republic.
Neeshal: Yes, please. Please Shawan bhai. Please, excuse me. Please leave me out of this.
Shawan: Neeshal, would it just be possible for once to meet you?
Neeshal: I wish. I wish I could come and meet you but unfortunately, I am not there. And you can. For all my other details etc, anything you need, please don’t call me for all these things. I request.
Shawan: Neeshal, no, I ... I completely understand this. If you just hear me out. Just for minute
Neeshal (simultaneously): Thank you.
Over the next 48 hours, Neeshal Modi’s conversation with Shawan Sen turns to whatsapp chat, wherein they exchange over 50 messages. In the WhatsApp chat, Neeshal reveals sensational details about his hideout and also claims that he is just a victim.
“I am living in Belgium, not London,” said Neeshal Modi.
When he was asked whether he has been in touch with his brother Nirav Modi, Neeshal says, “I am not in touch with him since 5-6 months, and I am a victim being a family member.”
Neeshal in the course of the chat reveals that he doesn’t want to come out in the limelight as he is trying to ascertain what is going on his name, claiming, he is a "small guy in a big kind of situation”. Neeshal Modi also claims that he is still grappling with the details of the case, and once the accurate information is out, he will be able to clear his name.
Furthermore, while allegedly suggesting bad blood between the Modi brothers and their uncle Mehul Choksi, Neeshal claims that “he is in this situation because of a certain family member.”
"Honestly I have been in this situation because of a certain family member, I do not wish to speak or know anything,” said Neeshal, however, when he was asked whether he is talking about Choksi, he evades the question.
Republic attempts to contact Neeshal again, this time via a text message from Republic TV’s Editor-in-chief Arnab Goswami to reconfirm his address because the voicemail was in English, to which Neeshal replies that he was in Belgium and that he was not comfortable to discuss anything as he himself “is a victim and trying to understand his position”.
