Union Minister Arun Jaitley spoke to Republic TV's Arnab Goswami about the new welfare scheme Pradhan Mantri Kisan Sammaan Nidhi.
"We are already reaching rural areas with farmers getting cheaper LPG connections, MNREGA, Ayushmaan Bharat scheme etc. If the responsive government has done so much for the farmers and you still see fiscal space for government support for farmers, this is the support in terms of income. We are in business cooperative federalism. This is going to be Rs 75,000 crore to start with," he said.
"Congress once gave loan waiver of Rs 70,000 of which Rs 52000 was given to the traders as per CAG report.
"Whatever Centre does the state has to top it, the farmers have to be the responsibility of everyone," he added.
Earlier while speaking to ANI, the Union Minister taking a dig at the opposition said that reforms are needed for the problems of farmers rather than 'myopic slogans'
He said, "In last coming years, we have seen shortages producing into surpluses. The US is subsidizing is their farmers, the European Union is subsidising. Reforms are necessary for farmers' problem rather than myopic slogans. We believe the farm sector still needs support; Centre and States must come together and cooperate."
He further slammed the opposition for shedding crocodile tears for the farmers.
" A political party which came out with a national hoax has the audacity to say that a scheme like this at a pan India level is too little? For people who have done virtually nothing.
...Over and above all this, the Centre says when you buy your inputs, seeds and fertilizers I give you initial financial support. Loan waivers are never a solution in the farm sector problem in the long run and income support is. Please don't shed crocodile tears for the farmers. The Indian farmer is the producer of food and their productivity have improved. In the last few years, we have seen productivity. Four years ago, pulses were in shortage," he added.
