"At around 11 am, we received information that a fire has broken out at Apeejay House. The fire has now been doused. There are no casualties, and nobody was trapped. The cooling process is underway," said Deputy Commissioner of Police (South Kolkata), Meeraj Khalid.

Ten fire tenders were rushed to douse the flames at the Apeejay House, a commercial building with offices of Tata Motors, Kotak Mahindra Bank, and Coal India Limited, among others.

Primary reports suggest a short circuit on the fifth floor of the building triggered the fire in the morning. Several residents of the area and people from the building, who were evacuated, tweeted pictures of the fire.

The photos tweeted by people show a dense cloud of smoke erupting from the building. The Kolkata traffic police stopped entry of all vehicles towards Park Street for a while. Traffic at nearby areas has been affected.
