Union Minister Giriraj Singh shooting off his mouth backed the protests against filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Padmaavat. The BJP leader further claimed that he laments the fact that the protests were led by the Karni Sena and not the 'Hindu Sena' as Queen Padmavati belonged to the Hindu community.

"For our existence, I feel sad to see when a film is made on Padmavati, Karni Sena takes the lead. I say Hindu Sena should take the lead because she belongs to the Hindu community," Giriraj Singh said.

Karni Sena's protests

Rampant violence and destruction of public property were witnessed in various parts of the country back in February 2018 as fringe groups took to the streets to protest against Padmaavat. The protests continued despite the fact that the Supreme Court has ruled (and reiterated) that the movie will be allowed to release and that the states must provide security.

The protests were propelled to an extent where, the President of Karni Sena, Mahakaal Makrana openly threatened to assault actress Deepika Padukone if the movie depicts any part of their history or clan name in a misleading fashion. The Rajasthan-based outfit had even threatened to chop off the nose of lead actor Deepika Padukone if she did not refrain from making "provocative" statements. They had even threatened to behead the filmmaker. A Haryana BJP leader had reportedly announced a bounty of Rs 10 crore for anyone beheading Padukone and Bhansali.

Padmaavat's filmmaker was under attack from the group since Bhansali started shooting for the movie. The set of the movie was vandalised twice - in Jaipur and Kolhapur - and the director was roughed up by Karni Sena members in Jaipur in January. Mahakaal Makrana had asserted Karni Sena's stand saying that if any part of the movie shows the queen or the history of Rajputana in a bad light then the entire team of Padmavati and the actress will face the brunt of it and did not hesitate when making the very unacceptable and violent threats against Deepika. The film featured Deepika Padukone in the title role of Rani Padmavati, with Shahid Kapoor as Maharawal Ratan Singh and Ranveer Singh as Sultan Alauddin Khilji.
