BJP president Amit Shah on Sunday expressed condolences over the demise of Goa CM Manohar Parrikar.

Stating the many, he lavished praise upon the late former Defence Minister, recounting his many traits of an exemplary politician.

"Goa's chief minister and the former Defence Minister of India is no more with us. This is not just a loss for the BJP but also for public life in India. He had reached this position in public life after working from the bottom. He lived as a patriotic man all his life.  His image was spotless in spite of reaching the heights of his political life. As the Defence Minister, be it the modernisation of the Forces or the first surgical strike under PM Modi, he is an example of a great administrator. Today, Goa is a model state in the country and it is because of his contribution. He was a great patriot, a good karyakarta, an excellent administrator and a person who lived by his ideology. We all stand with his family and may his soul rest in peace. We hope his work is continued by our party workers," he said.

Parrikar, 63, died at his private residence at Dona Paula near the state capital on Sunday evening after prolonged illness.

President of India Ram Nath Kovind announced on Twitter about Parrikar's demise. He tweeted saying:

"Extremely sorry to hear of the passing of Shri Manohar Parrikar, Chief Minister of Goa, after an illness borne with fortitude and dignity. An epitome of integrity and dedication in public life, his service to the people of Goa and of India will not be forgotten."

A four-term chief minister and former Defence Minister, Parrikar had been battling a pancreatic ailment since February last year. The BJP stalwart's health, which had been fluctuating for over a year, took a turn for the worse in the past two days.

Parrikar's mortal remains will be kept at the BJP head office from 9:30 am to 10:30 am on Monday, before shifting them to the Kala Academy.
