Harsha Bhogle: 'Must return the money because it's stolen, not lost'

Cricket commentator Harsha Bhogle on Wednesday commenting on Punjab & Maharashtra Co-operative (PMC) Bank scam stated that he is "disturbed by banking system."

Cricket commentator Harsha Bhogle on Wednesday commenting on the Punjab & Maharashtra Co-operative (PMC) Bank scam stated that he is "disturbed by the banking system." He further stated that "we must return their money because it has been and not lost." On September 23, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) had imposed regulatory restrictions on the PMC Bank for six months over the alleged financial irregularities. Earlier, they had also fixed a certain amount of Rs 1,000 that could be withdrawn during the restrictions. Since then, the striking account holders have been asking to revoke the decision.

A petition filed in the SC 

A petition has been filed in the Supreme Court  (SC) regarding the PMC bank scam. According to reports, the apex court has agreed to hear it on an urgent basis on Wednesday. Further reports stated that the PIL seeks protection for the victims of the scam, which has resulted in thousands of depositors being unable to access their savings. Providing some relief to the account holders, the RBI had on Monday increased the withdrawal limit for depositors from Rs 25,000 to Rs 40,000. Along with this, an FIR has been registered by the EOW (Economic Offences Wing )on September 30 against the Housing Development and Infrastructure Limited (HDIL). Another FIR was filed under the Money Laundering Act, 2002 (PMLA) as well.

Amit Shah gives an assurance 

Earlier on Tuesday, during an exclusive interview with the Republic TV, Union Home Minister Amit Shah addressing the PMC bank scam assured the depositors that their interests will be protected as Enforcement Directorate (ED) has seized more amount than the actual amount of the fraud. He further stated that 80 per cent of the depositors with less than Rs 1 lakh in deposits are insured under the Depositor's insurance scheme. He stated that only legal proceedings are left and assured all the account holders that they will get their money back.

Account-holders' protest

After the RBI imposed regulatory restrictions on the PMC Bank for six months over the alleged financial irregularities on September 23, several account holders of the PMC bank have been protesting in Mumbai against the Reserve Bank.
