Haryana assembly elections
Haryana went to the polls on October 21. As per the Election Commission of India figures, the total turnout was 68.47%. When the results were declared three days later, BJP emerged as the single-largest party with 40 seats. However, this was a drop from the party’s 2014 tally, when it had secured a majority on its own. On the other hand, Congress bagged 31 seats while the Dushyant Chautala-led Jannayak Janata Party (JJP) won from 10 constituencies. Thus, hectic parlays were going on in both the ruling and opposition camps for the formation of the government. Both sides were trying to persuade JJP and the Independents in this regard.

BJP-JJP form government
Initial reports suggested that senior Congress leader Bhupinder Singh Hooda had reached out to Chautala. Eventually, BJP stitched a post-poll alliance with the JJP, offering the post of Deputy CM to the latter. The ruling party also categorically refused to take support from the controversial Independent MLA Gopal Kanda. Along with Khattar, Dushyant Chautala took oath as the Deputy CM of Haryana. The other ministers would be sworn in at a later stage.
