Here are five VIP prisoners who lived life king size in prison

Allegations of AIADMK general secretary VK Sasikala receiving VVIP treatment in the Bengaluru central jail has stunned the nation, given the fact that they were made by the DIG Prisons. We take a look at some of the other high-profile prisoners, who lived life king-size in prison.

1) Lalu Prasad Yadav: 

Former Bihar chief minister and RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav had access to five-star comforts when he spent three months at the Birsa Munda Central Jail in 2013 in connection with the multi-crore fodder scam. Unlilke other inmates, Lalu was provided a TV set in his prison room and even had two personal cooks, who served him the food of his choice. Lalu's menu in jail gave him the option of choosing from mutton, chicken and fish, besides ghee and seasonal fruits. 

 

2) Manu Sharma:

Son of politician Vinod Sharma,  Manu Sharma was convicted for the murder of Jessical Lal. However, Sharma continued to enjoy benefits which regular inmates could not. In 2009, Sharma created a huge storm when he made the excuse of attending his grandmother's funeral to get parole, but was spotted partying.

 

3) Subrata Roy: The Supreme Court may have sent Sahara chief Subrata Roy to prison in 2014 for not paying his depositers a staggering Rs 20,000 crores, but the beleagured Sahara chief had a luxurious prison cell in Tihar jail. According to journalist Sunetra Choudhury who writes in her book 'Behind bars: prison tales of India's most famous', Subrata Roy enjoyed benefits that had "never been seen by anybody in prison before". "Subrata Roy is the first person in the history of Tihar Jail to have comforts of air-conditioning," wrote Choudhary.

 

4) Amar Singh: Sent to Tihar jail for his allege role in the cash-for-vote scam, Amar Singh had lived life king size inside the prison. Senior officials of Tihar jail, where he was lodged, had revealed that Amar Singh had a ward with an attached bathroom (even though the Court had ordered for him to be placed in the barracks. He was also provided with two cell mates, who would scrub the floor of his cell clean. Jail officials had admitted that Singh was very demanding. 

 

5) Asaram Bapu: Self-styled Godman Asaram Bapu, who was sent to jail after being convicted of rape, seemed to have enjoyed VIP treatment inside the Jodhpur Central jail, where he was lodged. The Godman reported demanded Ganges water for bathing purposes. He also reportedly ate only food cooked at the homes of jail officials. The Supreme Court in December 2014, had asked him to undergo a medical test at AIIMS when asked for special treatment, stating that 'there cannot be different criteria for different people.
