PM Narendra Modi in an address on Wednesday gave an important message to the nation. PM Modi announced that India entered its name in the elite space power as it accomplished 'Mission Shakti'.
In a difficult mission, India shot down a low earth orbit using its A-Sat missile within three minutes and became the fourth country to be able to shot down an LEO.
An anti-satellite missile (A-Sat missile) is a space weapon and used to destroy satellites for strategic military purposes. While countries have demonstrated their power by shooting down their own satellites, an A-Sat missile has never been used in warfare.
A low earth orbit (LEO) is an Earth-centered orbit with an altitude of 2,000 km (1,200 mi) or less (approximately one third of the radius of Earth), or with at least 11.25 periods per day and and an eccentricity less than 0.25. An orbital period is of 128 minutes or fewer. Most of the manmade objects in space are in LEO.
The A-Sat developed by India helps to immobilise military architecture of the enemy which is controlled by the satellite navigation in case of war-like situation. the A-Sat helps in deterrence if there is war-like situation.
The entire mission is indigenous and the missile is a much more advanced than the missile shield India bought from Russia in 2018. It can target missile of the enemy nation.
PM Narendra Modi while speaking about the significance of the mission said, "'Mission Shakti' is an important step towards securing India's safety, economic growth and technological advancement. A-SAT missile will give new strength to India's space programme."
India has become a part of the super league of space power. It has become the fourth nation to achieve the feat which was earlier achieved by United States, Russia and China.
PM Narendra Modi spoke about military achievement with respect to international laws.
"I assure the international community that our capability won't be used against anyone but is purely India's defence initiative for its security. We're against arms raised in space. This test won't breach any international law or treaties."
"India has entered its name as an elite space power. An anti-satellite weapon A-SAT, successfully targeted a live satellite on a low earth orbit. India has registered herself as a Space Power today; till now only US, Russia and China have achieved this; now India is the 4th country to achieve this feat. It was a very difficult mission. It is a very proud moment for India and its citizens today. I would like to congratulate the scientists of India who operated the mission successfully."
