BJP leader Meenakshi Lekhi on Tuesday spoke to Republic TV after Congress president Rahul Gandhi has tendered an unconditional apology in the Supreme Court for incorrectly attributing his 'Chowkidar Chor Hai' attack to the apex court's order in the Rafale review petition.

Saying that Gandhi's apology was a vindication of her petitiont, Lekhi told Republic TV that the apology alone was not enough and that she is demanding that it is a serious offence. She also slammed the Congress for believing that it could get away with such acts.

"It's not enough from my perspective, but the court has to take its call. We are demanding that it's a serious offence, which they tried to justify. After being rebuked by the Supreme Court, they've filed another affidavit. Under these circumstances, these people will think they will get away from this and law will never catch up with them. They do not understand what is the role of the court in democracy and all these things, the present atmosphere building against the court. This is a vindication of my petition," she said.

The apology from the Gandhi scion has come in the form of a third affidavit filed by Rahul Gandhi in the matter of the contempt petition moved against him by BJP MP Meenakshi Lekhi. The affidavit is a far smaller one than the two that were filed earlier.

In the previous hearing, when Rahul Gandhi via his counsel Abhishek Manu Singhvi had filed a second affidavit which was along the same lines of his first, in which he had said that he had made the statements in question 'in the heat of political campaigning' and expressed 'regret', the Supreme Court had been unsatisfied, with the Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi asking if 'expression of regret' quantifies as an apology.
