Home Minister Amit Shah pays tribute to BJP icon Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee on his 66th Death Anniversary

Union Home Minister Amit Shah paid tribute to late Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee on the 66th Death Anniversary of Bharatiya Janata Party icon on Sunday.

Taking to Twitter, Amit Shah spoke about the contributions and sacrifices that Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee made for the country and as his legacy as the founder of Jan Sangh. 

"For Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee, only the nation was supreme and he sacrificed his power for the unity and integrity of the country. Mookerjee launched the first nationalist movement of Independent India against two legislations, two leaders and two symbols," the Home Minister wrote in one of his tweets.

In another tweet, Amit Shah said: "With the aim of rebuilding India, Dr Prasad Mookerjee founded the Jan Sangh. It's because of his sacrifice that today we can travel to Jammu and Kashmir without a permit and also West Bengal is an integral part of India."

Founder of Bharatiya Jana Sangh, Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee served as the Minister for Industry and Supply in Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru's cabinet. He is regarded as the founder of BJP. He served as the President of Akhil Bharatiya Hindu Mahasabha from 1943 to 1946.

He strongly opposed to Article 370, arguing that it posed as a threat to the unity of the country. Therefore, without any prior permission, he entered Jammu & Kashmir in 1953 and went on a hunger strike to protest the law that prohibited Indian citizens from settling within the state. It was due to his efforts that the ID card rule was revoked. He died there June 23, 1953, under mysterious circumstances.
