In a shocking incident, 42 women from a dance troupe in Assam were allegedly attacked and molested by a group of 700 men during a cultural event on June 7. Recounting the horrific incident, victims said that they were tricked and brought to the event spot, as the organisers invited them to perform at an Eid function. However, when they reached the event venue, they found a large mob of men who allegedly harassed and molested the women dancers and forced them to strip naked.
One of the victims stated that the mob of men also threatened to kill them:
"When we went there that day they said that the programme was there in Somoria but actually it was not there. They came to receive us. And similarly at first, they said it was a Bihu function but once we reach there we found out that it was a ticket show. As soon as we reached the started misbehaving with us. They said that we need to do nude dance. Why would we do nude dance and they said that we went there from Kokrajhar which was again a lie. They misinformed our sir about everything and took us there. We had no choice left. They forced us saying that they will stab us with degar (A traditional Assamese knife) and threatened us. We were very scared and somehow we managed till the police came. One of our colleagues was kicked on the stage. and then we saw a little hole in the bamboo wall barricade through which we ran away," recounted one of the girls of the dance group.
Another victim narrated the horrific incident saying that the group of girls were forced by the men to strip and do "disco" dance. She said that the dance troupe was tricked saying that it will be a Bihu dance performance at the event. However, it turned out to be a lie, she added.
"They wanted Disco dance, sexy dance. They said they will murder us. Everybody got scared started crying. 15-20 people asked us to do nude dance. They could have raped the girls. I identify each one of them. They started throwing stones on us. We somehow split in groups and ran from the spot. They were targeting to rape the girls. We are protesting so that this kind of thing never happens to anyone else. We were taken to a different place than told. They told us Bihu but demanded Disco from us. They should be given the hardest punishment," said one of the victims.
Meanwhile, the National Commission for Women has taken cognisance of the incident and has taken up the matter with the Assam Police.
In the aftermath of the incident, huge protests have been carried out by people on the streets in Boko, Assam.
