HRD announces list of universities that will be declared as IoE

In a recent development, The Ministry of Human Resource Development had issued orders to 5 universities conveying their declaration as Institutions of Eminence

In a recent development, The Ministry of Human Resource Development had issued orders to 5 universities conveying their declaration as Institutions of Eminence ( IoE) on September 4.This was followed by the advice of the University Grants Commission (UGC) and the empowered expert's committee. The five universities which have received the orders are IIT Madras, Banaras Hindu University, IIT Kharagpur, University of Delhi and Hyderabad.

Indications from Universities awaited

Amrita Viswavidyapeetham, Tamil Nadu, Vellore Institute of Technology, Tamil Nadu, Jamia Hamdard, New Delhi, Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology, Odisha and Bharti Institute, Satya Bharti Foundation, Mohali are some of the private universities that have also received the letter of intent for sending their mindfulness for being declared as IoE. An official statement asserted these universities to submit their preparedness on IoE before the commencement of the new academic session. The statement added that in reference to two more universities, Shiv Nadar University, Uttar Pradesh and O.P Jindal University, Haryana, letters were issued to the State Government to pass a legislation in the State Assembly to cease the status of these universities as Private Universities under the State and so as to enable them to be considered as IoE Deemed Universities. Jadavpur University (West Bengal) and Anna University, Tamil Nadu were also selected and have been asked to connote their readiness towards the IoE scheme. There are 16 institutions to date as IoEs, apart from which four state government institutions are still to confirm their intent.

Institution of Eminence 

As announced by the Finance Minister in 2016, the commitment of the Government to empower Higher Educational Institutions and to help them become world-class teaching centres, marked the launch of IoE. Its main objective is to provide for high-quality teaching and research for the advancement of knowledge and its dissemination through various research programmes, undertaken in-house by a substantial number of full-time faculty and research scholars in diverse disciplines. 10 public and 10 private institutions will be identified to emerge as world-class Teaching and Research Institutions. This will make high-quality education affordable for ordinary Indians.
