Hyderabad Blast 2007 Verdict: Two of the accused persons, Aneeq Shafique and Mohammed Akbad Ismail, convicted by Hyderabad court

The local Court has convicted two accused in the 2007 twin bomb blasts in Gokul Chat and Lumbini Park that rocked the city. The quantum of sentence for the convicts namely Mohammed Akbar Ismail Chowdhari and Aneeq Shafique Sayeed will take place on Monday next week.

A Hyderabad court on Tuesday convicted two accused in the Hyderabad blast 2007 in Gokul Chat and Lumbini Park in the city in 2007. The quantum of sentence for the convicts, namely Mohammed Akbar Ismail Chowdhari and Aneeq Shafique Sayeed, will take place on Monday. 


Details of the verdict:

Convicted in the Hyderabad blast 2007 case: 
Anique Shafeeq Sayeed, Mohammed Akbar Ismail Chowdhari 

Acquitted in the Hyderabad blast 2007 case:  
Farooq Sharfuddin Tarkash, Mohammed Sadiq Israr

  • One accused Mohd Tariq Anjum is a special case as he only gave shelter to IM operatives. His case will be heard on September 10. 
  • Quantum of punishment of others will also be given on Monday. 
  • Key accused Bhatkal brothers are absconding.

The incident had claimed 44 lives and left 68 injured. The victims and family members of those who lost their lives in the twin-bombing were eagerly waiting for the verdict which was pronounced by the Court on Tuesday.

The verdict was earlier postponed: 

Earlier in August, Second Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge T Srinivas Rao postponed the judgment in the case and allotted September 4 as the verdict day. The Counter Intelligence (CI) wing of the Telangana Police had conducted an investigation into the matter and arrested five accused who were alleged Indian Mujahideen (IM) operatives.

The agency had filed four chargesheets against the five accused in the Hyderabad blast 2007 and also named two other absconding persons as accused. They accused named in connection with the Hyderabad Blast 2007 were:

  • Riyaz Bhatkal
  • Iqbal Bhatkal
  • Mohammed Akbar Ismail Chowdhari
  • Aneeq Shafique Sayeed
  • Farooq Sharfuddin Tarkash
  • Mohammed Sadiq Israr
  • Ahmed Shaik
  • Tarik Anjum

They were produced before the court on August 27 through video conferencing from Cherlapalli Central Prison. 

Earlier in June, the trial against the five accused in the Hyderabad blast case were shifted to a court hall located on the premises of Cherlapalli Central Prison from a court located in Nampally Court complex. The accused were charged under:

  • Section 302 (murder)
  • Other relevant provisions of the IPC sections of Explosive Substances Act

According to the prosecution, Aneeq Shafique Sayeed allegedly planted the bomb at Lumbini Park while Riyaz Bhatkal planted the bomb at Gokul Chat while an unexploded bomb was planted by Ismail Chowdhari.
