Air Chief Marshal Birender Singh Dhanoa extended his good wishes and recalled his 1988 ejection during his and Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman's joint sortie from Pathankot airbase on Monday. They flew a MiG-21 fighter for 30 minutes on Monday afternoon. This comes after Wing Commander Abhinandan got his flying credentials back after being deemed fit-to-fly, months after he had ejected while piloting the MiG-21 Bison in the air-clash versus Pakistan in the Nowshera skies.

Air Chief Marshal BS Dhanoa spoke about a similar ejecting incident that he faced after fighting in 1988. He said, “It was a pleasure for me to fly with Abhinandan as he got his flying category back. This is the moment that all pilots look forward to. I have also been ejected in 1988 and it took me nine months to get my flying category back. Abhinandan has been back in less than six months and that is very good for him.”

Chief Marshal also said that Wing Commander Abhinandan has also retained his designation. He added, “He is currently the trainer captain and he has got all his qualifications back. It’s good that he is back to be the instructor on MiG-21.” Air Chief Marshal also went ahead to highlight the similarities between his and Wing Commander Abhinandan’s career during his interview. He said, “Both of us have two things in common, one is that both of us were ejected and the second is that both of us have fought the Pakistanis. I have fought in Kargil and he has fought in Balakot.”

The Air Chief Marshal also spoke about Commander Abhinandan’s father and his assigned squadrons during their time together. He said, “I have also flown with his father. His father and I were together in Adampur in the MiG-21 squad. It was indeed an honour for me to do this sortie in the fighter with his son”.
