The International Cricket Council (ICC), on Wednesday, shared former Indian Captain Sourav Ganguly’s photo from 22 years ago, when he recorded his best ODI figures against Pakistan on September 18, 1997. The match was played in Toronto, Canada. Here is the tweet shared by the ICC: 

Ganguly's match-winning performance with the ball

The match is not remembered for Sourav Ganguly’s exquisite shots through the off-side and neither did he amass a big score. In the third match of the Sahara Series between India and Pakistan, the conditions were ideal for the pacers and batting was difficult. Ganguly single-handedly won the match for India with his medium-pace bowling and the Pakistani batsmen had no answers when he got the ball to move a little off the pitch. Batting first, India managed to score 182 runs in the 50 overs. It was Ganguly’s day with the ball in hand as he finished his spell of 10 overs with 5 wickets, giving away only 16 runs along with 3 maidens. India bowled out Pakistan for 148 in 36.5 overs and won the match by 34 runs.

Ganguly went on to claim 15 wickets in the series and scored 222 runs at the strike. He won consecutive Man-of-the-Match awards. Notably, Ganguly took 100 wickets in his ODI career and scored more than 11,000 runs.

Sourav Ganguly on MS Dhoni's retirement

Sourav Ganguly has always been known to be very vocal in voicing his opinion. In a recent press conference, when he was asked about MS Dhoni’s retirement, the former skipper was of the opinion that the selectors and the skipper should take the call on MS Dhoni's future, according to media reports. Ganguly felt that the selectors and skipper Virat Kohli were important people and hence they should take a call on the veteran's retirement. Sourav Ganguly also threw his weight behind India and said that the Men in Blue were a very dangerous side, completely capable of dismantling the opposition in both Tests and in the limited over formats of the game.
