IGI Airport: Man detained for attempting to smuggle phone, watches

The Delhi airport officials have arrested a person, who had arrived from Hong Kong, for allegedly trying to smuggle branded phones & watches worth Rs. 20 lakhs

The officials at Delhi Indira Gandhi International Airport on Sunday have arrested one person for allegedly trying to smuggle branded items worth Rs. 20 lakhs into the country. The accused had arrived from Hong Kong. He was intercepted by the officials after his arrival at the Delhi airport. 

The accused was frisked by the officials. After checking his baggage, they recovered over 27 Iphones, 330 watches of different brands such as Rolex, Diesel, Tommy Hilfiger, Versace among others. The officials also seized over 20 branded tracksuits and one iron soldering machine. The man has been charged with section 104 of the Customs Act, 1962. All the goods that have been seized are under section 110 of the Customs Act.

During the investigation, the accused admitted to the crime and also said that he brought such commercial items worth Rs. 85 lakhs in his past visits, during the period from October 2017 to September 2019, according to the officials. Further investigation into the matter is underway.

Earlier, A man was caught smuggling gold worth nearly Rs. 30 lakh at the Delhi airport after his arrival from Moscow, Russia. He was found with gold bars and gold wires concealed under his clothes, the Customs officials reportedly said on September 26. The man, who landed at the Indira Gandhi International Airport from Moscow, was questioned by the officers of Air Customs (Preventive). A detailed search revealed that he was carrying six gold bars and four gold wires. According to the officials, the seized gold weighed around 794 grams, costing a market value of approximately Rs. 29,96,079. The gold has been seized and the passenger arrested under relevant provisions of the Customs Act, the officials reportedly said.

In a similar incident, a man returning from Dubai was held at Delhi airport for allegedly smuggling gold worth Rs. 22 lakh. He landed at Delhi airport on September 3, after which he was intercepted by the Customs officials for crossing the Green Channel. A baggage search resulted in revealing gold weighing around 1,200 gm concealed in the jeans worn by the man. After extraction, 567 gm of gold with a market value of Rs 22,49,856 was recovered.
