IGNOU pledges to ban single-use plastic in campus, signs MoU with SDMC

On the eve of Mahatma Gandhi's 150th birth anniversary, Indira Gandhi National Open University has pledged to eliminate single-use plastic in the campus

On the eve of Mahatma Gandhi's 150th birth anniversary, Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has pledged to eliminate single-use plastic or disposable plastic in the campus. The university has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) to eliminate the use of plastic items such as polythene bags, thermocol plates and cups, plastic spoons, and straws in the campus.

Taking inspiration from the PM's vision

Professor Nageswara Rao, the Vice-Chancellor of IGNOU, has insisted on all the faculty members and the people working on the campus to refrain from using single-use plastic in the campus. He said that the step is taken keeping in mind the Prime Minister's vision to make the country free from the single-use plastic. The IGNOU has also given instructions to all regional centers that single-use plastic should not be used and students should be prevented from doing it.

PM's repeated indications to avoid single-use plastic

PM Modi, while addressing a gathering at the Sabarmati Riverfront in Ahmedabad on the occasion of the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, said that India has to achieve the goal of ending the usage of single-use plastic by the year 2022. He said, “Sanitation, environment protection, and life protection, these three subjects were dear to Gandhi Ji. Plastic is a major threat to all three. Therefore, we have to achieve the goal of freeing the country from single-use plastic by the year 2022.”

Prior to Mahatma Gandhi's anniversary, the Prime Minister had said on several occasions, that it was time to say "goodbye" to single-use plastic and urged people to try to curb its use from October 2, 2019. Starting from his Indipendence day speech to the 14th conference of parties to the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), the Howdy Modi event and the UNGA climate action summit, PM Modi has tried to bring the world's attention to the menace of single-use plastic causing environmental hazards. In guidelines issued to the States and Union Territories earlier, the environment secretary had said that all government offices must completely ban all types of plastic carry bags, thermocol disposable cutlery and discourage the use of artificial banners, flags, flowers, water bottles, plastic folders, etc.
