Update at 6:54 PM: Congress MLA Nitesh Narayan Rane surrendered before the Kankavali police.
In a major development, Maharashtra Congress MLA Nitesh Rane has been taken into police custody for attacking a Highway engineer with mud and tying him up. The Congress MLA, son of former Maharashtra CM Narayan Rane, was taken into custody after a Zero FIR was filed against him and his supporters in the Kudal police station on Thursday.
Earlier, two accused were detained by the police. The case has been transferred to the Kankavali Police Station, from where Nitesh Rane is member of Maharashtra Legislative Assembly. The FIR has been lodged against Nitesh Rane and his supporters under the Sections 353, 342, 332, 324, 323, 120(A), 147, 143, 504, 506 of the Indian Penal Code.
Following the arrest of Nitesh Rane for misbehaving with a government official, Republic spoke to NCP leader Majeed Memon who assured that the party will bring a motion in the Parliament to take strict action against VVIP netas who attack government officials.
"The law must take its own course and he should get his due as far as the legal process is concerned. This matter should not be taken on political considerations. He is an MLA and he must set an example of fair and good behaviour towards people. And if breaches that, he must face the law. He cannot say that he is above law. This action against him is a welcome step. We will have to take up this issue in the Parliament and I will give notice as to how the behaviour of such people should be regulated," Mr Memon said.
Earlier speaking to media, Nitesh Rane tried to defend his actions in attacking a government official, implying that he will take law into his own hands again.
"These officials think that all politicians are sold. Nobody has the capability to buy Rane. Leave our Kankavli and Sindhudurg as it is by doing its development. From now, every day I and that engineer will supervise the highway work. I have the medicine for all these people's inefficient work. We are working for the people's welfare," Rane had said.
Justifying his son Nitesh Rane's act of throwing mud on a highway engineer, former Maharashtra Chief Minister Narayan Rane said that while the action was wrong, the protest was justified as the highway was kept shut for a long time.
"While Nitesh was staging a protest, some karyakartas threw muck at the civic officials. I apologize on behalf of them as throwing muck, hitting officials is wrong. But the highway has been kept shut for many days which has affected the nearby market, making people's lives difficult due to which Nitish was protesting. But the incident which happened in the protest is wrong," he said.
