India and United States issued a joint statement on Friday following the 2+2 dialogue. The joint press-briefing was addressed by EAM Sushma Swaraj, Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and US Secretary of Defence James Mattis. During the briefing, the ministers announced their intent to increase information-sharing efforts on known or suspected terrorists.
The US Secretary of Defence, Mattis, in his statement spoke about 26/11 Mumbai attack and also condemned the senseless terror perpetrated by Pakistan. Mattis also called on Pakistan to ensure that the territory under its control is not used to launch terrorist attacks on other countries.
On the 10-year anniversary of the 26/11 Mumbai attack, Mattis called on Pakistan to bring to justice expeditiously the perpetrators of the Mumbai, Pathankot, Uri and other cross-border terrorist attacks.
“We through the bilateral cooperation are recognising that both our nations have endured the effects of senseless terrorist attacks, like those 10 years ago in Mumbai, which killed innocent people. We remember those lives lost as we approach the 10th anniversary of the attacks this November. Today, the step we took has paved a way for even closer military relationship. Our meeting signifies bright future for the 2 nations,” said US Secretary of Defence James Mattis.
In her statement, EAM Sushma Swaraj welcomed United States’ decision to designation of terrorists.
“These listings are based on terrorism that is flourishing in Pakistan, which has equally affected India, US and the world,” said EAM Sushma Swaraj.
EAM Swaraj also said that the designation of terrorists will also help in strengthening cooperation and action against terrorist groups, including Al-Qaeda, ISIS, Lashkar-e-Taiba, Jaish-e-Mohammad, Hizb-ul Mujahideen, the Haqqani Network, Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan, D-Company, and their affiliates.
She also said that on the 10th anniversary of the 26/11 attacks, she recognises the importance of justice, adding, “and retribution for the masterminds behind the terrorist attack.”
Swaraj also expressed confidence that the decisions taken in this first 2+2 Dialogue will help in unleashing the untapped potential of relations between India and the US. "I am confident that our discussions and decisions that we will take today will help unleash the untapped potential of our relation and further elevate the level of our partnership," she said.
