The Indian Army troops deployed in Jammu and Kashmir performed their role by participating in the largest festival of democracy as the country went to polls in the first phase of the Lok Sabha elections 2019.
In a first-of-its-kind, the Election Commission of India provided the facility to the troops deployed in far-flung, remote and inhospitable terrain to download their ballot papers online, vote and forward the ballot papers to their respective Electoral Returning Officers through the post.
Braving the severe weather conditions and undeterred by the ceasefire violations the soldiers enthusiastically cast their votes for parliamentary elections; exhibiting the strength of the democratic process.
The polls will saw seats from where high profile candidates (including Union Ministers) are fighting.
Nitin Gadkari, Kiren Rijiju, VK Singh, Mahesh Sharma, Hansraj Ahir, Agatha Sangma, Mukul Sangma, Harish Rawat, Ajay Tamta, Jayant Chaudhary, Satyapal Singh, Nabam Tuki, Renuka Chowdary, Nama Nageswara Rao, Chirag Paswan, Asaduddin Owaisi are some of the candidates contesting polls during Phase I.
