Ravi Shankar Prasad addresses a press conference after Supreme Court orders Kolkata Police commissioner to appear before CBI officials:

The police officer has to appear in Shillong. Supreme Court order has clearly stated that he will now have to appear before CBI in Shillong. The Supreme Court has given a notice to contempt of court. The big question is why was the Rajeev Kumar not helping in the probe for the last 3 years. Why were they not appearing before the CBI? Why is Mamata Ji Silent on this? Why are the other parties silent on this? Today is a moral victory for CBI. Now, the investigation should be done is a fair manner.

The Supreme Court will hear CBI’s plea alleging destruction of evidence related to the Saradha chit fund scam case by the Kolkata Police Commissioner Rajeev Kumar on Tuesday. On Monday, while agreeing to give an urgent hearing to CBI’s plea the top court clearly stated that it will come down heavily on him if he “even remotely” tried to destroy evidence.

The plea of CBI seeking initiation of contempt of court proceedings against West Bengal Chief Secretary Malay Kumar De, DGP of West Bengal Virendra and Police Commissioner Rajeev Kumar said that CBI has been conducting investigation as per the apex court’s order and CBI has found substantial evidence against Kolkata Police Commissioner, for which it sent summons to him.

The plea says 'summons were not responded to properly by the Police Commissioner' and he was found to be destroying evidence pertaining to the case. The non-cooperation of Rajeev Kumar was brought to the notice of DGP West Bengal, however, neither the DGP nor Police Commissioner cooperated.

The applications accusing Kolkata Police chief Rajeev Kumar of destroying evidence related to the case and indulging in contempt of court were mentioned by Solicitor General Tushar Mehta before a Bench comprising Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice Sanjeev Khanna.

The probe agency’s applications also stated that an extraordinary situation has arisen in which top police officials of the West Bengal Police are sitting in a dharna along with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

Earlier on Saturday night, West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee launched a dharna in the heart of Kolkata to protest the move of the CBI to question Kolkata Police commissioner Rajeev Kumar as she accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP president Amit Shah of plotting a ‘coup’. She said her struggle will continue till “the situation is resolved.” Her comments came as she visited the police commissioner’s residence after a CBI team which showed up to quiz the Kolkata Police chief was detained by the local police.
