Independence Day 2019 speech: PM Modi explains 'Jal Jeevan Mission', emphasises criticality of water conservation

During the Independence Day 2019 speech, PM Modi announced the 'Jal Jeevan mission' to ensure drinking water reaches every household in the country.

On the occasion of the 72nd Independence Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the nation from the Red Fort, New Delhi and talked about several social reforms that are in progress for the welfare of the nation. During his speech, PM Modi spoke about the importance of water conservation and said that the government is committed to ensure that drinking water reaches every house in the country. He further announced the 'Jal Jeevan mission' to achieve the goal.

Speaking about the importance of water conservation, PM Modi said, "At many places, people not getting drinking water even today. They need to travel a lot to get drinking water. We have to provide water to every house. We are working towards it. I am announcing from the Red Fort that we will go ahead with 'Jal Jeevan Mission' to ensure that drinking water reaches every house in the country."

"It is unfortunate, however, that so many people lack access to water even 70 years after Independence. Work on the Jal Jeevan Mission will progress with great vigour in the years to come," he added.  

"The movement towards water conservation has to take place at the grassroots level. It cannot become a mere Government program. People from all walks of life have to be integrated into this movement," he stated further. 

Elaborating on 'Jal Jeevan Mission', he said that both Center and States are going to work together on this Mission and Rs. 3.5 lakh crore is allocated for the same.

The Prime Minister highlighted many other important aspects like poverty and terrorism and said that the government is dedicated towards the development of the country. He also announced that the government has decided to invest Rs 100 lakh crore on the country's modern infrastructure. He concluded his Independence Day address by chanting 'Vande Mataram' and reciting the National Anthem.
